Many residents have already observed visible indicators of water quality stress, including:
We cannot solve water quality issues in one Lake without addressing the entire watershed. Nutrients move through the chain, so solutions must consider the whole system. That is precisely why the Marble-Coldwater Clean Water Partnership focuses on a chain-wide approach. What we don’t yet know is which sources are contributing most to the problem. That’s exactly what a Watershed Management Plan (WMP) is designed to determine. Scientists don’t just measure the water in the lake — they also study the entire watershed, which is all the land area that drains into it. In addition to sampling water quality in the lake and its tributaries, they examine features of the surrounding landscape such as soil types, land slopes, stream channels, shorelines, roads, septic systems, lawns, farms, forests, and wetlands. |

A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains to a common point, such as a lake, river, or wetland. Watersheds play a critical role in water quality, wildlife habitat, and community health because activities on the land — from development to recreation — directly affect the water that flows through it.
A Watershed Management Plan (WMP) is a science-based roadmap that identifies water quality challenges, sets priorities for action, and recommends strategies to protect and improve the health of the watershed. Why We Are Developing a Watershed Management Plan At this time, there is no current, accessible Watershed Management Plan for the lake chain. If a plan was completed decades ago, it is not available for reference and would not reflect present-day lake conditions, land use patterns, recreational pressures, or current environmental standards. Water quality science, regulatory requirements, and watershed planning methodologies have evolved significantly over the past 30+ years. Developing a modern, data-driven plan ensures that future decisions are informed by current information and best practices. |
